The concept sees people taking breaks without telling their boss to avoid having to ask for time off; playing hooky while doing things to make it look like they’re working when they are absent, such as scheduling messages. A study out of the USA indicates that 37% of millennials have used quiet vacationing to take time off without communicating it to their employer, with 24% of Gen Z, 24% of Gen X, and 18% of Boomers doing the same thing, due to fear of looking like a slacker by booking a holiday. Though this trend may cause outrage for some bosses, it perhaps should be viewed as a handy piece of evidence of the importance of supporting a good work-life balance among staff and the value of utilising paid time off. 54 Business Link www.blmforum.net The importance of a name With having a memorable name important to business success, sometimes a funny one can be just as effective. Celebrating the wit and creativity of these firms, Simply Business’s ‘Britain’s Best Small Business Name’ competition has revealed its winner for 2024. After a 10-strong shortlist was whittled down from thousands of entries, almost 2,500 public votes have now been cast, crowning ‘Surelock Homes’ as the winner. The locksmith beat off stiff competition from Indian-inspired street food business ‘Tikka Chance On Me’ and clothes printing company ‘Prints Charming’. As well as causing a chuckle, witty company names play a significant role in helping small businesses succeed. Indeed, over half of consumers said they are likely or very likely to shop at a small firm with a funny name, according to Simply Business research. © stock.adobe.com/gustavofrazao © stock.adobe.com/ImageFlow Messy desk dread Us Brits are much messier at work than Frazer realised! A new study has unveiled that one in three of us admit to having an untidy desk, of varying degrees, from ‘somewhat messy, but I can easily find what I need’ to ‘extremely messy, with items piled high’. And of those people that put themselves on the messy scale, 74% confess their work from home desk is worse than the set-up they have in the office — Frazer would like to see what this means for the extremely messy bunch! The study from Repeat Digital additionally asked its participants to share the less traditional items cluttering their desks, with some of Frazer’s favourites being a figure of Professor Quirrell from Harry Potter, a wooden block that says ‘it is what it is’, a picture of Phil Mitchell (from Eastenders) dressed up as a baby, and a miniature rubber duck wearing a top hat. With almost half of the messy crowd saying that their desk makes them feel ‘overwhelmed’, ‘stressed’ or ‘embarrassed’, with Albert Einstein’s quote “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” perhaps there’s not so much to feel self-conscious about! © stock.adobe.com/New AfricaCONVENTIONAL NDT •X-Radiography & Gamma Radiography •Computed and Digital Radiography •Close Proximity Radiography •Ultrasonic Inspection •Magnetic Particle Inspection •Dye Penetrant Inspection •Eddy Current & Eddy Current Array •Positive Material Identification (PMI) •Hardness Testing •Ferrite Testing •ACFM Inspection •Vacuum Box Testing ADDITIONAL SERVICES •Rope Access •Heat Treatment •Pressure Testing •Welding Inspection •Materials Laboratory (ISO 17025) •Welder Training •Failure Investigations INSPECTION AND TESTING SERVICES ISO/IEC 17020 / ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 / OHSAS 18001 For all enquiries please TELEPHONE: 01469 575728 | Email: ukinfo@irisndt.com | www.irisndt.co.uk CHATHAM | DERBY | DEESIDE | HULL | IMMINGHAM | PEMBROKE DOCK | STOCKTON-ON-TEES ADVANCED NDT •Remote Robotic Inspections – Visual & UT •Drone Surveys – Internal and External •Laser Scanning •Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing •Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) •AUT & PAUT Corrosion Mapping •Tube Inspection (IRIS, ECT, RFT, NFA) •Guided Wave Testing – Long Range UT •QSR1 – Corrosion Under Pipe Supports •MFL – Tank Floors and Pipelines •HTHA Inspections (TOFD, TFM, PAUT & TULA) ASSET INTEGRITY ENGINEERING •Pressure System Inspections •Storage Tank Inspections •Pipeline Inspections •Out of Service and In-Service Inspections •Category 1, 2 & 3 Inspectors •Written Schemes of Examination (WSE’s) •Fitness for Service (FFS) Assessments •Engineering Calculations •Maxi-Trak Field Services (Customized Software) •Bund Surveys IRISNDT is a leading provider of Asset Integrity Engineering, Non-Destructive Testing, Heat Treatment and Laboratory services.
