< Previous40 Business Link www.blmforum.net CORPORATE HOSPITALITY cohesive, but should also align to your event’s goals, featuring memorable activities. One will then be ready to choose a venue to suit your event, its mission and size. Venue choice can have a major influence on attendance and will set the tone. Providing a location that is unique and exciting can boost numbers, adding to an event by offering an experience that departs from the overdone to make a lasting impression. This will give guests something to talk about too and make them more likely to discuss the event once it’s over. However, where the venue is positioned must be factored in. It’s all well opting for a quirky manor house in the countryside, but in order to achieve the best attendee numbers it is usually advisable to seek somewhere convenient with good accessibility that is close to transport and accommodation if necessary. For those with lower budgets, consider holding events at less popular times and days, such as organising breakfast seminars, and securing the venue plenty of time beforehand to take advantage of any price deals for advance booking. The ‘when’ is of course another important factor - will your guests prefer to set aside time on a weekday, weekend, evening, or afternoon? While looking for a venue remember to enquire about equipment, what will be provided for you and what you will have to source and set up yourself, such as audio-visual elements, stages and lighting. You may further need to make a decision on in house or external catering, with in house tending to work out cheaper and simpler. When picking food ensure to think about dietary requirements, whether you will be offering a set menu or asking attendees to choose beforehand, and how you want the food to be served - on trays with canapés, as a buffet or sit- © stock.adobe.com/sonyachnywww.blmforum.net Business Link 41 CORPORATE HOSPITALITY down meal. In preparation for the day, you will also need to contract any necessary reputable specialists - caterers, audio-visual technicians, photographers et cetera, as well as booking any speakers, presenters and entertainers - and draw up the agenda for the event, sharing this with your team and determining who is responsible for what. When it comes to the agenda, look to form a balance between giving guests freedom and keeping them engaged with a schedule and variety. Use of technology to help your event go off without a hitch should additionally be considered. There are plenty of event management software options to streamline planning but also for creating interactive features during the event like live polls to boost participation. In the lead up to the event, make sure to promote it creatively. For smaller occasions a simple invitation may be enough, however for a larger soirée you might want to do something louder with emails, ads, social media, blogs, promo videos, adding events to industry listings, getting sponsors and media on board, and encouraging the business’s team to promote the event when visiting clients. Ensure to create a website for the event or a new landing page on your own site and in promotion use the same hashtags and branding across platforms and consistent messaging. After the event is over, there are a couple of final checkboxes to tick off to evaluate your success. A debrief with your team and gathering feedback from guests are important and will allow you to uncover whether the event met its original goals and objectives and if it had an impact on attendees. The lessons learned from this will be crucial to refining your next event. © stock.adobe.com/Jacob Lund42 Business Link www.blmforum.net AUTOLINK motors Future We look at some motors coming this year, and what’s on the horizon for the next. Suzuki Swift Suzuki Motor Corporation showcased the all-new Swift Concept at the Japan Mobility show in Tokyo in October 2023 and introduce it in the UK and the Republic of Ireland in April 2024 as its fourth generation global compact supermini. The all-new Swift represents an automotive advancement aimed at uplifting the driver through succession, evolution and innovation. In addition to its stylish exterior design in a compact size of just 3,860mm long, the Swift features excellent visibility, a spacious cabin and ample luggage space. The initial development goal was to create an all new hatchback style that is undoubtedly Suzuki and with all the technology you need. The muscular appearance of the new Swift is further established by blacked-out pillars creating the appearance of a floating roof that adds a sense of lightness, while a high-tech look comes in the form of a piano-black front grille and L-shaped signature lamps that conform to the car’s flowing body lines. The LED headlamps have been revised to an inner lens + light rod type that give them a wider appearance when illuminated. Inside, a new high quality dual-tone design is featured with centre controls angled towards the driver and a prominent nine-inch infotainment display fitted as standard equipment. The research published in the Academy of Management Journal explores how ‘leader humour’ puts pressure on staff to engage in ‘surface acting,’ where they feel they must fake or exaggerate positive emotional reactions and laughter to naff jokes. Through a field experiment, lab experiment, and a multi-wave field study, it was found that bosses who make too many jokes increase the amount of surface acting employees do, leading to emotional exhaustion or burnout, and thus lowering job satisfaction. Fortunately, for Frazer, this does not mean bosses must stop making jokes in the office. Indeed the study finds that when fewer, ‘higher-reward attempts’ at quality humour are made, a positive outcome can be had on employee wellbeing. 50 Business Link www.blmforum.net Motivational mess Who doesn’t love a motivational poster in the office featuring a generic phrase and scenic backdrop? Well, perhaps quite a lot of people, it turns out. A new survey by Preply has revealed that 46% of workers are not at all influenced by motivational phrases in the workplace, with 53% of those surveyed saying they would never use a motivational quote in their everyday lives. The research, however, did find that not all phrases are redundant! While “Do the impossible” and “The sky’s the limit” are amongst the least motivating lines, direct phrases like “Keep up the good work” were the most motivating. A generational difference can also be found, with millennials the most responsive to motivational phrases and over 55s the least. © stock.adobe.com/zhu difeng © stock.adobe.com/zinkevych A new job at the penguin post office If you’re looking for a fresh start, or perhaps to get away from life’s stresses, Frazer has a new career that could be for you…in Antarctica’s ‘penguin post office’! Candidates are required to be ‘self- motivated’, ’empathetic’, and happy to go without showering for up to two weeks. They must also be comfortable with extended periods of time without phone or internet. The Port Lockroy shop is the southernmost post office in the world, but while you may think such a remote job would make it easy to successfully secure, every year the Antarctic Heritage Trust is in fact flooded with applications. Employees will sort post, sell stamps, look after the buildings, run the gift shop, and count the 1,500 gentoo penguins that live in a colony at Port Lockroy. © stock.adobe.com/ Steve YoungNext >
